PIERCING  AFTERCARE

The hardest part of going through a new body piercing isn't getting the piercing itself; it's the extra attention it needs afterwards for it to heal properly. Poor aftercare can lead to numerous complications such as infection and rejection. Both can leave noticeable scars on your body. If you see signs of rejection, remove the jewelry or call your local piercer immediately.

One of the important rules of aftercare for a piercing is to not remove the jewelry until the piercing heals. Also, do not touch the piercing without washing your hands. Oil and bacteria from your hands can get inside the piercing and cause an infection. You should clean your piercing 2-3 times a day. It's a good idea to clean it throughout the day: Once in the morning, once in the middle of the day, and once at night before you go to sleep is a good idea. Also, be sure not to let any bodily liquids such as sweat to get into the piercing. That means after any exercise you should clean it.

There are different methods to clean your piercing. For external piercing, salt soaks and anti bacterial soap is probably the best solution. The salt soak will loosen the tissue around the jewelry and the soap will kill the unwanted bacteria that may cause infection. You should do a salt soak once or twice a day. Be sure to use sea salt, as table salt can contain iodine and it might do more harm than good. Mix 8 ounces of water with a fourth table spoon of sea salt. Press the cup against your piercing so the water won't spill. Soak the piercing for about 5 minutes. To clean with anti bacterial soap, first wash your hands. Then remove any crusting around the piercing holes with something disposable such as a cotton ball or tissue paper. Apply soap to your finger tips. You may want to dilute the soap with water as directly applying soap to the piercing may irritate it. Gently apply soap on the jewelry and rotate the ring or barbell so the soap can get into the hole. After rotating the jewelry a few times, rinse off all the soap with warm water. Be sure all the soap is rinsed off. Pat the area dry with a new disposable tissue. Even though a piercing may seem healed, you must continue cleaning it until the healing span is over.

For oral piercing, use alcohol free mouthwash and/or sea salt solution.

Healing times are vary with individuals. The chart below is an approximate time for healing:

Location Healing Times
Ear 4 - 8 weeks
Eyebrow/Bridge 8 - 12 weeks
Navel 6 - 12 weeks
Oral 6 - 12 weeks
